Streets of Color the photography exhibition about Boston Carnival. period 2005 to 2006

One of the many reason for this exhibition, is to preserve the history of Boston Carnival and expose the culture and art to a wider audience. Each new season produce new exciting designs, color combinations and themes which only last for a day although it consumes several months of hard work to design and assemble, including the several thousand dollars required to produce each band. This is the essence of a Trinidad style Carnival, a renewal of sorts – New music, new designs, new interpretations, a new beginning. This is what I believe captivates the millions who travel each year to Trinidad and other “Trinidad style” carnivals around the world.

Streets of Color

Streets of Color are a photography exhibition featuring the works of photographer Michael C. Smith. The photographs are of images taken during the annual Boston Carnival celebration covering the last two seasons 2005 to 2006, and will features an estimated 25 to 50 fine art photographs.

On August, 23 1973 a group of Trinidadian, residing in Dorchester, Massachusetts, led by Ken Bonaparte Mitchell launched the very first “Trinidad style” carnival parade which follows the traditions of Trinidad and Tobago carnival very closely. Trinidad’s carnival has gained the reputation of being the Mecca of Carnival, throughout the world. Today, Boston’s Carnival is larger, quite inclusive, and colorful, has many more bands that covers a wider spectrum from traditional American parade bands to those from Trinidad and many of the other Caribbean islands and attracts an estimated 500,000 visitors to the community annually.

Our goal is to promote appreciation for Boston’s Carnival to a wider audience through the exposition of Michael’s collection of unique photographs, and gain more monetary supports for the various participants of this event, particularly the band leaders and children carnival- the leaders of tomorrow.
