• In 2006 many thing happened… many positive, many negative. As I write these line changes are on the way. Some of you are aware of BCV’s site new URL; it is www.BostonCarnivalVillage.com this site is going to be dedicated to the bandleaders of Boston, including the pan men of New England. Due to matters which I am not going to discuss here until CACAB has made a final decision about www.BostonCarnival.org , that website will most likely administered by another webmaster. Due to ongoing issues which I taught would be resolved by this time, I am still in a wait and see mode.

• Member who wants to know about the results for 2006 carnival season and when exactly is the awards ceremony is going to take place. Sorry folk that information is not available to me at this time. Send an email to sshillingford@BostonCarnilval.Org good luck…

• In 2007 there are many new thing planned, my ongoing efforts for a more positive exposure in the print, radio and television media outlets is ongoing. Successes were achieved with television – television did behind the seen interview with some of the bandleaders and several of the community newspapers published my articles on Boston Carnival. The release of the survey taken in 2005 meet with some success, however it remains to be seen how the results will used by CACAB and others to improve the quality of Boston Carnival. That I am currently pursuing vigorously. Also panned, are a 100 piece photography exhibition on Boston Carnival (2005 – 2006) entitled “STREETS OF COLOR”. I am looking for sponsors, places to exhibit the pieces and persons interested in helping make this project a reality. If you are, please send enquiries to Michael at exhibition@bostoncarnivalvillage.com

• As stated earlier BostonCarnivalVillage.com is headed in a new direction, it will be totally redesigned with a focus on the bandleaders, Steelpan community and all things about Boston Carnival. The site has slideshows of Jouvert 2006 and soon to be added is one on Kiddies Carnival, King & Queen and the Parade.

SHEYNNENE HAZEL WOOS AUDIENCE at CACAB’s Annual Awards Show
By Michael C Smith

SHEYNNENE Hazel Boston's Kiddies Carnival 2005 It is said, the key to keeping one’s culture moving is to keep it alive through the children. Teach and guide them with your wisdom and culture and their future will be in good hand. Sheynnene Hazel epitomizes this statement. On Friday November 05, 2004 at Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, she graced the audience with some of the finest quality Soca / Calypso lyrics I have heard in some time, her presentation and delivery outstanding.

Sheynnene is eleven years old and has been singing since the very early age of four. Sheynnene, a native of Trinidad, came to Boston to perform at the Caribbean American Carnival Association Inc. (CACAB) annual awards show. She sang three songs entitled: Music Sweet, But the Lyrics Poor, Long Road to Freedom- A tribute to Nelson Mandela and The New Mall. The last two songs won her the National Junior Calypso Monarch Championship award for the past two years. Sheynnene is currently enrolled at St Joseph’s Convent, form one. She is an avid reader and her hobbies include Reading, singing, playing the piano, Steel-pan and Dance. Her current plans are to graduate, become a doctor, and continue to sing Calypso. When asked what advice she would like to send her fans, she said: “If you want to do something, try and try and don’t stop. If you stop the first time you will never know”.

Sheynnene is working on her first album, due out sometime next year. The compositions were written by Christopher Grant. He is known for his works with other artists such as Singing Sandra and many others. She is a very confident, dynamic and an articulate young lady. Her future is in her hands and so to, is the culture of Trinidad and Tobago. For those of you that missed this rising star, catch her when you can or purchase her CD as soon as it is available. Good luck, Sheynnene.

VILLAGE TRIBUTE
Marlene's Spririt Lives. Marjorie Osborne 1944-2004

Marlene came from a family that has its root deeply entrenched in the Carnival of Trinidad and Tobago. Her brother Rudy Osborne played “sailor” in Trinidad with “Trinidad All Stars Steelband” and he eventually went on to start D’ Midas International, a well known mass band in Boston and has been participating for several years. Marjorie Osborne, head of the family is also very active in Boston Carnival she has been playing an “individual” for several years and Richard Osborne even participated in Boston Carnival briefly before moving to Orlando.

Marlene was infected with the carnival sprit at very early age; she began playing mass with Seldana AKA Sally and Mc Williams bands at the age of twelve in Trinidad.

She settled in Boston with her family, and worked as an operating room assistant at Mass General Hospital. Marlene and her husband started a mass band and it is during this time Marlene returned to her true love of being a masquerader, one might say she lived for it, as her mom Marjorie said I like dancing and she loved her costume. Paying upward of $5,000.00 to have a costume designed and worn in Boston and New York’s carnival was never a problem, it brought her joy. Marlene and her husband band eventually disbanded.

The disbanding of the band did not bring an end to Marlene’s participation or her love for carnival. Her brother Rudy Osborne started his own band D’ Midas International it is in this band that Marlene played the queen of the band every year and participated in Boston and New York Trinidad style Carnivals. Her costumes were designed by world famous costume designers Stephen Derek and Alvin Bailey.

Marlene won several trophies and other financial prizes and always placed in the top three positions in Boston and New York. On two occasions she won second place in Boston and one first place in New York against the same competitors in Boston. On the advice of Alvin Bailey she began participating in Trinidad’s King and Queen Show and won second place in a field of 39 competitors on one occasion.

Marlene made her last appearance at kiddies Carnival in Boston in 2004 although she was not wearing a costume, she was quoted as saying “I always like to play queen and I am sorry that I would not be here again to play” after spending several months in bed and unable to walk, she found the strength, and courage to be there to be among the one thing that she lived for, Carnival.

Marlene is no longer with us; however her spirit, love of culture and exuberance will always live on and will inspire us all to make this world a better place for all. Marlene Moraldo the queen of Boston Carnival and a queen in our heats forever.
